Over the last few years a growing trend in the wedding industry has been “green weddings”. More and more couples are becoming aware of their carbon footprint and have been coming up with innovative ways to make their weddings as green as possible. Even though the city of Austin probably is not one of the most environmentally friendly places (though it is certainly not the worst) the people of Austin I think are more aware of their carbon footprint than most places. One good idea that we saw at recent wedding we attended was that the bride and groom rented a charter and bussed their family and friends from Dallas to Austin for their wedding. While it was a fairly small wedding of about 50 people they got two busses and loaded everyone up. Another idea is to find a wedding venue that is already using eco-friendly practices. One of the greenest wedding venues in Austin is called Barr Mansion. It is America’s only certified organic events facility and, according to their website is “A Zero Waste facility diverting 97% of our waste stream”.
There also several smaller things that you can do like sending recycled paper invitations, donating leftover food from the reception, and maybe even if your venue allows it, planting a tree there in honor of your marriage.
